March 2020 - a time where the world stopped.
We weren't commuting to work, we weren't getting out, and most importantly, we stopped moving.
Post-lockdown there's been recent research to say our society has become as inactive as ever. With the beautiful greenery of parks, National Trusts and the seaside...and the size of some of our shopping districts, we really have no excuse to not be getting our steps in.
It seems so obvious, but many ask why do I need to get my daily steps in? First of all, I recommend my clients to rack up anything between 10,000 to 20,000 steps a day (depending on their lifestyle, training plan etc), but if you're starting out lets stick to 10,000 steps.
So here's some of the many reasons why getting your step count in counts (no pun intended!)
It benefits fat loss - the more you move the more fat your burning. Getting some extra steps in the day helps burn energy resulting in fat loss, now who can complain with that?!
It keeps you active by changing your lifestyle to be on your feet more, you'll overall become an active person. I suggest start with baby steps (another pun, I'm too good), so maybe start by getting off the bus a stop earlier and walk the difference. If you're in the office why not walk to your colleagues desk rather than ring them, or another way of getting the steps in is to take the stairs instead of the lift. Before you know it, these small changes will become second nature.
It's free! You don't need no membership or contract or a joining fee to walk outside your front door and get some steps in. Well, unless you get your steps in by doing a bit of retail therapy like a few of my friends...that might become a costly habit!
Make it sociable by inviting some of your friends and their pets or children along. There's some great websites to help you find a walking route or trail, it should give an estimated distance and time to complete so you can plan ahead of your journey. It's a much more healthier option than meeting up for a meal and some drinks!
Make it fun - there's a lot of organised walks which you can find via a simple google search of 'organised walks by me' or some Facebook group to help find a walk with a difference. From Sausage dog meet and greets to fancy dress walks, there's really something for everyone.
It's a great escape, making time out for yourself can reduce your stress levels and overall have a positive impact on your mental health. I can't live without my daily walks. Not only do they get my body moving but it's the perfect time to get away from computer and phone screens and just enjoy some time with your friends, pets or some time to yourself. In a way, a 20 minute brisk walk in the outdoors is the perfect therapy.
