Ahh Summer is on it's way. You've worked so hard all Summer and only have a few weeks to go of your fitness plan and then boom...you've booked a tempting last minute all inclusive deal (they are tempting I must admit!) and you're ready to soak up some sun. This blog post covers some useful tips on how to stay on track and enjoy your holiday. This article covers:
Useful tips on how to get some exercise into your holiday without it feeling like hard work
Food and drinks to try and avoid and some great alternatives
How to not panic if you don't stick to your plan
Making exercise fun on holiday...yes that's right it's possible!
When we think of holidays abroad we normally head straight to the poolside, grabbing a sun-bed and then lie ourselves horizontal for 8 hours a day. Try and make your a holiday a bit more active.
Get some scenic walks in to really help get your activity levels up. You can still soak up some rays while going for a nice walk along the coast, through the local towns and villages to keep yourself active...you never know you might discover a hidden gem too!
Pack a resistance band for a quick hotel room 25 minute work out. Resistance bands are so light and won't have an impact on your luggage allowance. Head out to the balcony and do your workout too make the most of the views around you.
Explore the hotel gym as a lot of hotels now have gyms in them. Enjoy a quick little workout in the gym and keep cool in the highest temperature hours. You'll feel refreshed and ready for a dip in the pool afterwards.
Make the most out of the swimming pool! Unfortunately here in the UK we're not as lucky to have great whether as the Mediterranean so outdoor pools in this country are a rare find...so even more reason to get some lengths in your hotel pool if you have one. Try and get a solid half hour of swimming in each day and then after that the inflatables are all yours!
Smart choices and swaps on holiday
It's not only the warm weather that is tempting us to go on our holiday, it can be the food and drinks of a holiday that really push us to click that booking confirmation on SkyScanner!
Try and avoid greasy foods...why not try some local meat or fish dishes? Popular holiday destinations like Portugal, Spain and some places in France will really brag about their locally sourced fresh meat or fish...so why not take a bite? Meat and fish dishes are usually served with vegetables on the side too so opt for a more locally sourced meal rather than something you can get at home like a burger and fries.
Know your buffet. A lot of all inclusive hotels have a buffet style restaurant so it's great if you want a variety of foods. Try and think smart, add lots of vegetables to your plate and try to avoid anything that's beige looking and swimming in grease.
Don't underestimate calories in drinks. If you really want to stay on track of your diet, avoid having alcohol or having excessive alcohol. If you do feel the urge to have a drink try and have spirits mixed with a low sugar mixer and avoid sugary cocktails (Sorry Pina Coladas!) and beers.
Did you overdo it? Try not to panic...
Okay so you didn't listen to my advice above, try not to let panic mode sit in. Holidays are there for a reason, they're a time to switch off and do the things you love.
Remember to get back on track as soon as that plane touches the ground. Head to the supermarket and do a food shop and fill your trolley up with nutritional foods, the basics start in the food shop as mentioned in my blog here.
Early flight? Great the gyms still open! Try and get back into the gym as soon as you can. Try and not put it off...surprisingly a lot of my clients say they really look forward to that first gym session after a holiday!
Make a physical note of where went wrong and this will help keep you focused for next time. Grab yourself a pen and post-it note or if you're feeling fancy one of those lovely journals from Paperchase and make a note of what you done well on your holiday and where went wrong.
Overall I really want you to enjoy your holidays regardless. We've had two years of lockdowns and uncertainty so I say enjoy your holidays, switch off from work and escape. You'll find if you're in a more positive mindset you'll feel more focused and on track to smash your goals.
